So, you’ve taken the plunge to try Muay Thai. Congratulations! Muay Thai is an incredibly rewarding martial art that will test your physical and mental limits. But before you can enjoy all the benefits Muay Thai offers, there are a few important things you need to know for your first class.
Wear Gym Style Clothes
You’re going to be doing a lot of movement and stretching in Muay Thai, so it’s important to wear clothes that won’t restrict your range of motion. Gym shorts or leggings and a t-shirt or tank top are perfect. Avoid wearing anything too loose because it could get in the way when you’re trying to kick or punch. And while we’re discussing clothes…
Muay Thai Shorts Are A Plus
If you have a pair of Muay Thai shorts, definitely wear them to class! They help you move more easily. One of the biggest benefits of Muay Thai shorts is that they help you move more easily. That’s because they’re designed to allow a wider range of motion than regular gym shorts. This is especially important in a martial art like Muay Thai that emphasizes kicks, knees, and elbows.
Bring Lots and Lots of Water
Staying hydrated is key during any workout, but it’s especially important when practicing Muay Thai. There’s a lot of cardio involved, so you’ll be sweating buckets by the end of the class. Trust us—you don’t want to run out of water halfway through. So, bring a full water bottle (or two) with you and drink up regularly throughout the class.
Show Up Early
Classes can start feeling rushed if you come in at the last minute and try to get changed quickly. Plus, it’s always good to give yourself some time to get settled in before class starts. So, aim to arrive at least 15 minutes early. This will give you time to change, stretch out a bit, and chat with your instructor if you have any questions.
Don’t Eat Too Much Beforehand
It’s best not to eat a big meal right before working out, as you might feel sluggish or end up with an upset stomach. However, that doesn’t mean you should starve yourself either. Eating a small snack beforehand will give you enough energy to power through the class without weighing you down. Something like an energy bar or a piece of fruit would be perfect.
